May 29, 2018, Headwaters Trail in Portage Co. After completing my 42 mile loop on the Trumbull section of the Western Reserve Greenway, I decide to check out the Headwaters Trail (on my way home and I had packed both bikes). I accessed the trail in Mantua, just behind the McDonald’s on Rt 44. There is a short section from this point going west, but I recommend parking there and just head east (across Rt 44) to Garrettsville. The trail follows the route of the old Cleveland-Mahoning Railroad line. The path has a 10-12 foot wide crushed limestone surface and is mostly shaded. It was 92 degrees but much cooler under the wooded canopy. I rode my Fuji Jari gravel bike which was perfect for the surface.
There are a few historical markers along the way;
Jeddo Station (former rail station)
a marker indicating a rail disaster
and another about a great train robbery in 1936, cracked by J. Edgar Hoover.
The 8-mile trail has easy-to-find mile markers.
There are 3 places to enter the trail; Garrettsville, Rt 700, and Manuta.
For the locals, this is a great asset for bikers, runners, hikers and walkers. Nice views of the bogs and other water features along the way. True rails-to-trail in that it is basically flat and straight.

I have passed the trailhead many times, but this was my first time on the trail, 16 mile loop; thumbs up!
